Make a point to visit Historic Ragged Point Inn located on scenic Highway 1

The Ragged Point Inn, situated on the ocean side of scenic Highway 1, has long been a favorite destination of locals and out of town visitors alike. Just what is it that makes it this peaceful getaway such a desirable place to visit? Beyond the luxurious and inviting accommodations, meticulous gardens and pathways, and the tranquil nature of the property, one soon discovers there is something a bit magical here that carries over to one’s overall experience of the California Central Coast.

“Ragged Point is a magical spot with unparalleled views,” said General Manager Jim Ramey. “The vibe of the property stays with you as you continue your journey on Highway 1.”

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean just below, the Ragged Point Inn is located just south of the Monterey/San Luis Obispo County line approximately 50 miles south of the Big Sur campgrounds and 20 miles north of San Simeon.

History of the Ragged Point Inn

Wiley and Mildred Ramey purchased the property that houses the Ragged Point Inn, once part of the Hearst Ranch, in the late 1950s after visiting the nearby town of Cambria. The birth of the Inn is revealed on the company’s website: “The settlement itself was nothing special: a snack shack sporting a neon “EAT” sign, a couple of rusted gas pumps, and a travel trailer or two. However, the Rameys were totally entranced by the natural beauty. Because of this enchantment, they spent most of the next two years persuading the landowner, carnival man Monte Young, to part with the property. When they finally did, they disposed of the “EAT” sign and started building a two-room motel on this lonely stretch of highway.”

Their vision carries on today with the Rameys’ children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren working together to share their hospitality and welcoming ways. In addition to boasting 39 exquisitely decorated guest rooms with full amenities, the Ragged Point Inn property is home to a snack bar, gourmet restaurant, gift shop, artisan jewelry shop, coffee bar, and mini-market.

Jim points out one of the many advantages of operating a family owned inn — the ability to customize the experience for guests immediately and creatively without any interference that may occur in a corporate setting. For guests staying at Ragged Point Inn, that means the ultimate in hospitality and personal touches beyond compare.

The Cliff House

The Ragged Point Cliff House is ideal for those planning a meeting, special event, or celebration. The five individual private guest rooms of the Cliff House have adjoining baths, flat-screen TVs, luxury linens and additional amenities.

Perfect for large family getaways, reunions, or other events, renting the entire Cliff House gives guests access to a living area with a floor-to-ceiling craftsman stone fireplace and large flat-screen TV, a full gourmet kitchen, and a dining area that includes breakfast bar seating. In addition, those renting the entire house will enjoy a private grassed lawn overlooking the Pacific Ocean below.

“Our guests love how the five-room home has a common area kitchen, dining room and living room,” Jim said. “Over the years, we have been the perfect getaway for weddings, family reunions, baby and wedding showers, and corporate retreats.”

Concert series & more

Open to public, the Ragged Point Inn offers concerts and barbecue events from noon to 4 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday from April through October.

“The bands and barbecue on the weekends draw many locals to our property,” Jim said.

In addition, special menus are created in the Inn’s restaurant for guests during major holidays and a Sunday Brunch menu is in the works.

Walking trails on the outlying edges of the property and a hiking trail below are popular for those wishing to spend an afternoon surrounded by nature and picturesque views. Be sure to bring along some water, sunscreen, and a camera — the opportunities for capturing memorable photos are endless.

Whether visiting Hearst Castle, exploring the coastline, or driving California’s scenic Highway 1, a visit to the Ragged Point Inn property is sure to be captivating — walk or hike the area, savor the scenery, sip some coffee or wine, stay for lunch or dinner, and spend the night in optimum comfort and serenity.
